Humidity transmitters are important devices that provide protection from dangerous amounts of moisture in the air. Humidity can negatively affect electronics, textiles, and even human life. The technology sector is particularly sensitive to the effects of humidity. High humidity can cause increased condensation, which can permeate electronics and short circuit hardware. Increased moisture in the air can corrupt radio waves and prevent wireless communication. On the other hand, low humidity creates excess static electricity which can instantaneously destroy electronics. Extremely low levels can even can cause circuit boards to become weakened and cracked.
Using a Humidity Transmitter
A humidity transmitter is a device used to measure and record the air's humidity. Humidity transmitters are used in variety of industries including technology, meteorology, construction, and healthcare. Most transmitters contain an electrical sensor that measures the amount of voltage conducted through the air in relation to the air's overall temperature. In order to efficiently access the transmitter's data, most humidity transmitters are connected to RTUs, or remote telemetry units.
Understanding the RTU
Choosing the right RTU is the most important step in creating a successful humidity monitoring system. Remote telemetry units incorporate the transmitter's analysis into a readable and accessible form. RTUs are typically very diverse, with many different capacities, interfaces, and features. For example, some RTUs are able to connect to dozens of individual transmitters in order to provide complete coverage for a network site. Other RTUs provide advanced functions, such as customized email alerts and web interfaces where you can check the status of your individual humidity transmitters.
Choosing the Right RTU
When looking for an RTU, be sure to consider your current and long-term needs. Many RTUs have limited or outdated technologies. Always try to avoid getting locked into a single compatibility. Oftentimes, people purchase RTUs only to discover that they become useless within a few years. Other times, they find that their new RTUs aren't even compatible with their current system - which costs them a lot of time and money to replace.
With so many options on the market, it can be difficult finding the right RTU. Products from large electronics manufacturers are often unreliable, expensive, and come with very little tech support. Look for devices that are manufactured by specialized companies, who can design and customize RTUs just for your specific situation. Overall, it is very important that your RTU is reliable, quality-tested, and made from high-quality electronics.
Integrate an RTU that Meets Your Needs
Let's take a look at an RTU that meets our criteria. The NetGuardian 832A, manufactured by California-based DPS Telecom, is an example of an advanced RTU loaded with features. The 832A has tons of functionality, with room for 32 discrete alarms (expandable to 176), 8 analog alarms, 32 ping alarms, 8 controls, and 8 serial ports. The 832A can integrate all sorts of monitoring devices, including surveillance cameras and building access systems, ensuring that your site is covered for every potential hazard.
Another DPS RTU, the NetGuardian LT, is smaller but still has the advanced functions of the 832A. The LT has a capacity for 4 discrete alarms and can notify up to 8 people per alarm via text messages, phone calls, and email. Both of these RTUs are quality-tested, reliable, and manufactured on-site at DPS headquarters (rather than by mass production overseas).
