Case Study: Major Eastern Utility Integrates Legacy RTUs Into Their Existing Network With T/Mon

Incorporating sites equipped with legacy remotes into your existing network can be a hassle.

You may consider replacing the legacy RTUs with more current models. However, multiple new units hurts the bottom line. Replacing equipment at remote sites is costly and takes up precious time. This is especially true when your remote sites are difficult to access (think helicopter trips, icy roads, and snow drifts...).

Recently, we sat down with a Senior Systems Programmer at a Fortune 500 power utility in the United States to gain some insight as to how he uses his DPS monitoring system. "I was pointed toward DPS by word of mouth. We had a system that was using legacy remotes to monitor alarms, but eventually the manufacturer just quit and walked away. Someone that was helping me mentioned that DPS had a system that could do legacy remotes. I gave them a call. That's how we got connected."

T/Mon's multi-protocol support has helped this organization incorporate its existing legacy gear, while positioning themselves for evolving network technology.

"We merged with this power company in another state, and their alarm system was very strange so we replaced everything they had with NetGuardians. It was clear that in order to make it all work, we would need to transfer their entire monitoring system over to the NetGuardians."

T/Mon's multi-protocol support has helped companies solve this problem with ease. With over 25 protocols supported, T/Mon allows you to incorporate legacy devices into your network - while also positioning you for evolving network technology.

Maintain Your Unified Monitoring Umbrella With T/Mon

With operations throughout the United States, implementing NetGuardians has been an easy way for this client to consolidate all of his company's monitoring. "We've put in a lot of NetGuardians. We merged with this power company in the Midwest, and their alarm system was very strange, so we replaced everything they had with NetGuardians. It was clear that in order to make it all work, we would need to transfer their entire monitoring system over to the NetGuardians."

Updating their new system to include the NetGuardian and T/Mon has allowed this power company to track changes at remote sites facing severe weather conditions. "About 6 or 8 months ago, we had some really bad storms go through the Midwest, and the NetGuardians were able to track how it was moving through their system. It was very handy because all of the alarms were coming into the operations center and they could contact the people in the Midwest and tell them what was going on."

"Over all of the years, I can't think of a single time where I called DPS and didn't get the support that I needed to get the problem resolved. Usually the problem is solved with the first telephone call I make."

Looking to Advanced NetGuardians for the Future

Advanced RTUs, such as the NetGuardian, communicate with both modern and old technologies. According to this DPS client, "The NetGuardian is a good choice for the systems that we have right now. Over the next 2 years, we're going to replace all of our KDAs with NetGuardians."

With such a rich past, looking toward the future is easy. "It's honestly been a real good relationship. Over all of the years, I can't think of a single time where I called DPS and didn't get the support that I needed to get the problem resolved", he explained. "Usually the problem is solved with the first telephone call I make."
