In a failing legacy monitoring system, the danger usually isn't the remotes - it's the master. The master is a single point of failure, and it has a lot of parts that can go wrong: software that can crash, hard drives that can fail, a database you have to maintain (or perhaps restore from scratch after a hard drive failure). Your legacy master's technology is so old and slow - it's practically a relic. You might be running an impaired system with no spares and no safety net.
