How to Count Lightning Strikes and Protect Your Gear

If you have remote sites that are prone to lightning, you're facing some big risks. Surges can be incredibly destructive, and you have an extra reason to monitor your revenue-generating equipment. You can't afford to guess and test. You need to find and deploy proven technology.

You need a straightforward system that counts your strike frequency, provides surge protection and monitors your infrastructure equipment. Just follow these 3 steps:

Step 1: Count Lightning Strikes

First, your lightning-protection system must detect and count lightning strikes. This will give you good situational awareness and help you accurately predict your maintenance requirements.

This video will guide you through the basic architecture:

Step 2: Install Surge Protection

It's not enough just to count lightning events, you must also be proactive and protect your valuable infrastructure. To do that, you need to deploy a Surge Protection Device (SPD).

An SPD will intercept high current from sources like lightning and route them to ground.

Step 3: Set up General-Purpose Remote Monitoring

One of the best things you can do to protect your gear from ANY threat is simple, general-purpose remote monitoring. When you're monitoring your equipment status, that protects you from just about EVERYTHING, including lightning strikes, power failure, low generator fuel, battery failure, theft, vandalism, and natural disasters.

In the video example above, the NetGuardian DIN is featured as a good small-to-medium RTU to collect equipment alarms and monitor sensors.
