Client Overview

Chronos is a U.K.-based business-to-business specialist provider and system integrator of technical solutions for synchronization, time of day, and remote monitoring applications in telecom networks. Chronos also supports RF equipment designers with components, including GPS components and accessories for communications applications.

Chronos founder and Managing Director Charles Curry founded and chairs the International Telecom Sync Forum (ITSF) and sits on the steering group for the NIST-based annual Workshop on Synchronization in Telecom Systems (WSTS). He has authored many papers on synchronization. Chronos also developed "SyncWatch," a remote 24x7 probe that continuously monitors the quality and stability of a telecom network's synchronization.

The Challenge

The UK launch needed to do more than introduce products - it needed to align a broad audience on what modern alarm monitoring looks like in telecom environments and why it matters to protecting networks and revenue. Attendees were also dealing with practical migration issues, where topics like SNMP, LAN, and security were front-of-mind.

Chronos was already known by many customers for network frequency and timing expertise. A key goal of the seminar and training effort was to increase understanding of DPS Telecom as a company and the role DPS alarm management systems play in day-to-day network operations.

The Solution

DPS Telecom and Chronos delivered a concentrated launch program in London that included training, meetings, and multiple alarm monitoring seminars. The alarm monitoring seminar was attended by a cross section of major service providers (Cable & Wireless, Thales, Three, Trinity House, Neos Networks, Orange, T-Mobile), along with consultants and engineering companies.

The multi-speaker seminar covered a spectrum of alarm monitoring topics. It ranged from fundamentals (such as what monitoring is, why to monitor, and key monitoring elements) to practical considerations, including real-life case studies, product overviews, and a formal introduction to DPS Telecom and its monitoring approach.

Chris Roberts, Business Developer and event orchestrator, said "The purpose of this seminar was to educate and provide insights into the world of alarm monitoring to better protect networks and revenue. I believe we did just that". Chris later added "Prior to this trip, the attendees and our customers knew of Chronos through our network frequency and timing expertise, but most didn't know much about DPS as a company. Now, they know why we selected DPS as our alarm monitoring solution provider."

Charles Curry, founder and Managing Director of Chronos commented: "We are extremely pleased to have discovered DPS Telecom. They're product range is an excellent complement to our existing portfolio and they're commitment to customer satisfaction and knowledge based client relationships fits well with our own philosophy and business model."

After the formal presentation, attendees had open Q&A with the presentation team. A functional, hands-on exhibit demonstrated alarm management hardware and software in operation. Seeing the user interfaces under operating conditions helped make the seminar topics concrete, especially for engineers responsible for deploying monitoring or integrating alarms into existing operational processes.

Implementation

A 4-day training class was delivered using DPS Telecom's domestic curriculum, with additional emphasis on T/Mon Noc and LAN-based masters. The class was attended by DPS equipment users, companies focused on improving network reliability, and Chronos personnel as part of the training and certification process.

Training topics included the basics of monitoring, T/Mon operation, T/Mon provisioning, SNMP, ASCII processing, and NetGuardian installation and provisioning. (In the UK version of the class, breaks were replaced with "tea time".)

For teams implementing similar deployments, this combination of seminar plus hands-on training maps directly to how DPS Telecom solutions are typically introduced: establish the monitoring strategy first, then train operational staff on alarm flow, provisioning, escalation, and the interfaces used for daily work.

Results

Charles Curry receives Chronos plaque from DPS Telecom
Charles Curry (right), Managing Director, is presented a plaque commemorating a successful relationship by Eric Storm, President of DPS.

Chronos became a DPS channel partner for the U.K. and Scandinavia. The relationship aligned both culturally and technically, including similarities in company size, age, growth history, client base, and mindset.

From DPS Telecom's perspective, an essential factor was Chronos' focus as a full-service company that specializes in support. DPS maintains clear guidelines when considering channel partners, including the requirement that partners understand the product line and provide a high level of client service consistent with what DPS domestic clients expect.

The launch and training program also addressed a specific market outcome: Chronos customers and seminar attendees who previously associated Chronos primarily with timing and synchronization gained a clearer understanding of DPS Telecom, the role of alarm monitoring in protecting networks and revenue, and why Chronos selected DPS as its alarm monitoring solution provider.

Key Takeaways

  • Education accelerates adoption: A structured seminar that starts with monitoring fundamentals and moves to hands-on demonstrations helps engineers and managers align on requirements and operational impact.
  • Modern topics need practical answers: SNMP integration, LAN-based monitoring, and security considerations are central to telecom migration efforts, and they benefit from live demonstrations and Q&A.
  • Training supports long-term support: A focused 4-day curriculum (including provisioning and installation) helps build partner competency and improves the customer experience after deployment.
  • DPS solutions are designed for real NOC workflows: When deployed through a qualified partner, DPS alarm management and RTU telemetry can be integrated into day-to-day operational processes, not treated as a side system.

Partner Quotes

"We are extremely pleased to have discovered DPS Telecom. They're product range is an excellent complement to our existing portfolio and they're commitment to customer satisfaction and knowledge based client relationships fits well with our own philosophy and business model."

-Charles Curry, Chronos

"It's refreshing to work with a company that understands the importance of truly taking care of their clients long term interest as opposed to simply selling products. It takes a considerable commitment and investment to learn and maintain competency in a product line, and Chronos has done just that."

-Eric Storm, DPS Telecom

Products Used In This Solution

  • T/Mon NOC (alarm monitoring and alarm management): Used as the training emphasis for LAN-based master monitoring workflows. For modern deployments seeking comparable centralized alarm management, DPS typically recommends T/Mon LNX for building scalable alarm displays, rules, and escalation aligned to NOC operations.
  • NetGuardian RTU (remote telemetry and SNMP alarming): Used in training for installation and provisioning. For current deployments, DPS recommends the NetGuardian SNMP RTU family to collect discrete alarms, analog readings, and control points and forward events to a master alarm system.

Industry And Challenge FAQ

Why were SNMP and LAN-based monitoring key topics for the UK seminar?

Many telecom operators and service providers were migrating to new standards and architectures. SNMP integration and LAN-based monitoring are common requirements when consolidating alarms, integrating new network elements, and improving NOC visibility.

What does a T/Mon system do in a monitoring architecture?

T/Mon acts as the master alarm platform that collects events from RTUs and network devices, applies rules and escalation, and presents actionable alarms to operators. It supports workflows that help staff identify, prioritize, and respond to issues faster.

What is the role of an RTU like NetGuardian?

An RTU collects on-site alarms and measurements (such as contact closures and analog sensor values) and can forward those alarms upstream (often via SNMP) to an alarm master. This helps NOCs monitor remote facilities and infrastructure consistently.

Why include a hands-on exhibit as part of the seminar?

Hands-on demonstrations allow engineers to validate that the user interface, alarm flow, and day-to-day operation match the concepts discussed. Seeing the system operating under real conditions can clarify how to implement the monitoring strategy.

How does DPS Telecom evaluate and support channel partners?

DPS looks for partners who understand the product line and have the commitment to provide high-quality long-term support. Training and certification help ensure customers receive consistent service and successful deployments.
