Collect Alarms Over Fiber and Mediate them via LAN to Your SNMP Manager

Collect Alarms Over Fiber and Mediate them via LAN to Your SNMP Manager

Equipment Used:

  • 8-Point Alarm Collection Box
  • Fiber-to-LAN SNMP Agent
  • SNMP Manager

How This Application Works:

This solution provides the ability to collect up to 8 alarms inside the SCIF, and transmit those alarms via fiber outside the secure environment where the alarms will then be converted to SNMP V3 over 10BaseT LAN.

The fiber interface is critical to this application in that it eliminates a potential antenna source from the SCIF.

Originally, we had discussed SNMPv3 as an option, but because the incremental cost of SNMPv3 was not that high, coupled with the other benefits of that platform, it just made sense to move forward with the SNMPv3 approach.

DPS has a very talented pool of engineers and who routinely work on new products and packaging to create "perfect fit" solutions for our clients. We think you will be able to see from the application that this design is complete, clean and straight forward. There is no "kluge" of existing technology that forces extra user installation work, time or materials.

How the NetGuardian 216F will fit into your network:

For monitoring your smaller remote enclosure sites, the NetGuardian 216F provides the power you need in a compact unit. This powerful RTU is a LAN-based, fiber-supported alarm collector that provides network managers with remote visibility of their network elements. With 2 SFP fiber ports, LAN access for 7 network elements, 16 discrete alarms, 32 ping alarms, 7 analog inputs (4 general, 1 temp, 2 batt), and 2 controls, this versatile unit is the ideal network monitoring solution for outdoor enclosures in areas without existing LAN.

When a problem occurs, the NetGuardian 216F notifies personnel with a complete status message. Notification types include SNMP Traps, text message, TCP text, T/MonXM, E-mail, and paging through e-mail. The unit also stores up to 100 events in its event log.

In addition to network and environmental alarms and controls, the NetGuardian also includes terminal server functionality, allowing remote Telnet access to an external serial device. The NetGuardian is available in 1 and 5 port models.

The NetGuardian 216F is easy to install, with connec- tors for all serial and LAN ports, as well as alarm, analog, and control wiring. A back panel with all wire wrap connections is also available for other installation options. The unit mounts quickly in either 19inch or 23inch equipment racks while occupying only one rack unit of space.

Provisioning of the NetGuardian 216F can be easily accomplished using any Web Browser or generic TTY terminal. This can be done on site, using the front panel craft port, or remotely via LAN or dial-up modem. The entire configuration is saved on the NetGuardian 216F where it remains secure through power outages in non-volatile RAM.

Additional options include an external temperature sensor and a wire-wrap back panel for alternate connectivity options.

The versatility and reliability of the NetGuardian 216F make it an excellent choice for both inside- and outside-plant operations.
