Energy and Utility Remote Monitoring

Electric utilities and energy companies operate distributed infrastructure across hundreds or thousands of remote locations. Substations, communication huts, and generation facilities all require continuous monitoring to prevent outages, protect equipment, and maintain regulatory compliance.

At DPS Telecom, we work with power utilities managing over 1,000 sites, including some of the largest energy providers in the country. Our remote monitoring systems help utility operators detect problems at unmanned facilities before they cause service interruptions or equipment damage.

What Do Energy Companies Need to Monitor?

Utility infrastructure monitoring covers two primary areas: the power distribution equipment itself and the supporting systems that keep it operational.

Distribution and Substation Equipment:

  • SCADA endpoints and communication systems
  • Distribution automation devices
  • Protective relays and control equipment
  • Backup communication links

Site Support Infrastructure:

  • Battery backup systems and rectifiers
  • Generators (Kohler, Cummins, Generac, and others)
  • HVAC systems keeping equipment within operating temperatures
  • Physical security including door contacts and motion sensors
  • Environmental threats like water intrusion and temperature extremes

A single undetected HVAC failure can destroy tens of thousands of dollars in sensitive electronics. A rectifier malfunction can cause battery cells to physically expand and fail. Effective remote monitoring catches these issues early, while there's still time to respond.

DNP3 and Modbus Protocol Support

Energy companies often operate equipment that communicates via DNP3 or Modbus, the standard protocols for SCADA environments in the utility industry.

DPS equipment provides native support for both protocols. Our T/Mon alarm master and NetGuardian RTUs integrate directly with your existing infrastructure, translating proprietary protocols to SNMP when needed for compatibility with enterprise management platforms.

We currently support over 30 protocols. If you need a protocol we don't currently support, tell us what you're trying to accomplish. Our engineering team has developed new protocol support specifically for client requirements.

How Remote Monitoring Protects Utility Infrastructure

Monitoring Type What It Detects Why It Matters
Voltage monitoring Out-of-spec rectifier output, battery undercharging/overcharging Prevents battery damage and equipment failure
Temperature sensors HVAC breakdown, rising heat loads, potential fires Catches cooling failures before equipment damage
Generator status Run time, fuel consumption, on/off cycles Enables proactive fuel scheduling and maintenance
Door contacts Unauthorized access to remote facilities Provides immediate security alerts
Water detection Flooding, roof leaks, condensation Prevents water damage to sensitive equipment

Scaling from Regional Operations to Enterprise Deployments

Power utilities have different monitoring needs depending on their size. A regional cooperative managing 40 substations has different requirements than a major utility operating over 1,000 facilities across multiple states.

Our monitoring architecture scales to handle both scenarios:

Regional Utilities: Median deployments run 40-50 sites with our NetGuardian RTUs reporting to a central T/Mon master station. This provides consolidated visibility without the complexity of enterprise-scale systems.

Large Utilities: Enterprise clients like Southern Company and Dominion Energy operate DPS equipment across 1,000+ locations. For networks of this scale, our RTUs can report to existing enterprise management platforms like SolarWinds, Castle Rock, or IBM OpenView via SNMP.

Both approaches use the same reliable hardware and support infrastructure, just configured for your operational requirements.

What Makes DPS Different for Utility Clients

Custom Engineering: Approximately 80% of monitoring requirements can be met with standard configurations. The remaining 20% receives custom engineering to create a perfect fit. Unlike many vendors, we don't charge Non-Recurring Engineering fees for custom modifications when you meet our minimum order quantities.

Direct Access to Engineers: When you call technical support at DPS, you're speaking with the engineers who designed the equipment. This isn't a call center reading from scripts. It's the people who can actually solve your problem.

American Manufacturing: Every unit is built to order in our Fresno, California facility. This vertical integration allows rapid response to custom requirements and consistent quality control across more than 172,000 devices deployed worldwide.

Long-Term Partnership: Our average client relationship spans 10-15 years. We partner with you for long-term success rather than optimizing for one-time transactions.

Integration with Existing Infrastructure

Your utility likely operates equipment from multiple manufacturers, some of it decades old. Our monitoring systems are designed to integrate with existing infrastructure regardless of manufacturer or age.

Systems We Monitor:

  • Generators from Kohler, Cummins, Generac, and others
  • Battery plants and rectifiers from Eltech and other manufacturers
  • UPS systems bridging power transitions
  • HVAC equipment from any manufacturer

Platforms We Report To:

  • SolarWinds and other SNMP managers
  • Castle Rock
  • IBM OpenView
  • Custom SCADA platforms
  • Our own T/Mon for clients who want an end-to-end solution

This flexibility means you can improve monitoring visibility without replacing equipment that's still performing well.

37 Years Serving Critical Infrastructure

DPS Telecom has manufactured remote monitoring equipment since 1986. Many of our original clients from that era still rely on DPS equipment today.

Over nearly four decades, we've deployed monitoring solutions in the most demanding utility environments across North America. This field-proven experience shapes every product we design and every support call we take.

We understand that when your infrastructure goes down, communities lose power. Our equipment is built to help prevent that from happening.
