NetGuardian 832A G4: Powerful, Flexible, High-Capacity RTU

The NetGuardian 832A G4 RTU leverages the strengths of its predecessors and takes network visibility to a whole new level.

The NetGuardian's primary function is to mediate contact closures and analog voltages to SNMP traps - but it also serves as a reach-through terminal server, a self-contained all-in-one alarm monitoring system, a 24/7 email and paging system. - and there's much more functionality that this new evolutionary RTU has to offer.

NetGuardian 832A G4 Features

  • Mediate 32 discrete inputs, 32 ping alarms, and 8 analog alarms to SNMP traps.
  • Report alarms to multiple SNMP managers or T/Mon LNX so it's easier than every to support a more secure redundant master architecture
  • Supports LAN or dial-up transport - immediately implement SNMP monitoring without LAN or use dial-up as a backup path in case of LAN failure.
  • Monitor legacy telephony gear, battery plants, generators, security locks, temperature sensors, and all your other remote site equipment.
  • Expand your monitoring capacity up to 176 discrete inputs with the NetGuardian Expansion Unit.
  • 4-threshold analog monitoring (Major Over, Minor Over, Minor Under and Major Under).
  • Control site equipment with 8 control relays.
  • Alarm point grouping provides severity levels, custom virtual alarms and more.
  • Integrate with the Building Access System
  • Add sensors for temperature, humidity, etc.
  • The NetGuardian hinged back panel accessories provide alternatives for wiring your alarm points. Wire wrap, screw-lug terminations, and punch block are some of the wiring options available.
  • Multi-layer, multi-user, multi-privilege security system.
  • Control switches, routers, PBXs and other telecom gear through the NetGuardian's 8 terminal server reach through ports.
  • Integrated Web Browser interface for stand-alone alarm monitoring.
  • Email and pager alerts for 24/7 alarm monitoring without a master.
  • Live streaming video surveillance of remote sites with the NetGuardian SiteCAM.
  • Included Windows configuration utility.
  • Free lifetime firmware upgrades.

This versatile RTU is the ideal network monitoring solution and is the next evolution in the NetGuardian Series with new enhancements like Dual Ethernet, SNMPv2c, Multi-SNMP Manager support, High Speed Serial Ports, Multiple communication methods and more.

NetGuardian 832A G4 Benefits

  • You can use one RTU at all your remote sites, no matter what transport is available.
  • You don't have to install new transport to collect alarms.
  • As your network changes, you don't have to buy new remotes for new transports.
  • You only have to maintain one set of spare units and spare parts for your entire network, for great cost savings and convenience.
  • All your alarms are in one common format. You don't have to use a confusion of multiple consoles and multiple screens to monitor all your remote sites.

Because of its multiple transport capability, the NetGuardian also supports applications for bridging across multiple transports, and even strategies for protocol mediation and replacing legacy-monitoring equipment.

An Evolution of Earlier RTUs

The NetGuardian 832A G4's 8 serial ports can now run up to 110K baud. This means that you can use your NetGuardian 832A G4 to get data faster, as well as access a larger variety of devices (some modern devices can only run at 110K baud). The NetGuardian 832A G4 serial ports are RJ45 connectors using the YOST standard, so it's now even easier to connect straight-through cables.

We've added a secondary NIC, which permits the NetGuardian 832A G4 to connect to two separate networks. In this era of increased security measures and diverse network topologies, an increasing number of deployments require a second network interface. It's important to note, from a security and segmentation point of view, that both LANs can access the NetGuardian 832A G4, but they can't access each other. SNMP Traps, FTP, Web browsing and Telnet can be accessed from either NIC. Each LAN has its own status LEDs to facilitate setup and operation.

The integrated 4 Port Network Hub provides functionality for the NetGuardian SiteCAM giving you full visual site surveillance.

The NetGuardian firmware was also enhanced to support SNMP v2c. The NetGuardian 832A G4 can still be configured to use SNMP v1 so it will work well in your network, no matter what your Monitoring framework. The NetGuardian SNMP v2c implementation also supports the INFORM command, so SNMP traps can be positively acknowledged from the master. IF the master doesn't acknowledge receipt of the INFORM, the NetGuardian 832A G4 will resend the alarm until the master acknowledges. This reduces the likelihood of missing an alarm, since the SNMP protocol does not guarantee deliverability.

The NetGuardian 832A G4 also supports a second global SNMP manager, so it's easier than every to support a more secure redundant master architecture. The NetGuardian 832A G4 is RoHS 5 approved, for overseas clients requiring RoHS compliant units.

Flexible Notification

If an element fails to respond to successive pings, or if anything goes wrong with the environmental controls, the NetGuardian 832A G4 notifies personnel using a variety of methods with a complete status message. Notification types include SNMP Traps, alphanumeric pager, numeric pager, text message, TCP text, T/Mon, and E-mail. The unit also locally stores up to 100 events in its event log so that technicians can see history without having to interrupt NMS staff. In addition to network and environmental alarms and controls, the NetGuardian also acts as a terminal server for 8 serial ports, thereby eliminating the need for dedicated circuits and the recurring monthly costs associated with such transports.

Easy Installation and Configuration

The NetGuardian 832A G4 is an easy to install RTU, with industry standard connectors for all serial and LAN ports, alarm, analog, and control wiring. Hinged back panels with all wire wrap or pluggable connections are also available for other installation options. The unit mounts quickly in either 19" or 23" equipment racks while occupying only one rack unit of space.

Provisioning of the NetGuardian 832A G4 RTU can be easily accomplished using a web browser or TTY terminal. This can be done on site, using the front panel craft port, or remotely via LAN (TELNET) or dial-up modem. The entire configuration is saved on the NetGuardian 832A where it remains secure through power outages in non-volatile RAM. Additional options include a built in sensor power supply, dual power feeds, and integrated temperature and battery sensors.

Multiple Transport Options

With the NetGuardian 832A, multiple transports are no problem. This flexible RTU supports three kinds of transport: LAN, dial-up and optional serial connection for 202 modem, FSK modem, or RS-232. The NetGuardian can work with whatever transport is available at your remote sites.

Networks that are in transition aren't a problem for the NetGuardian either. The NetGuardian supports LAN, dial-up and serial connections simultaneously. So as your network upgrades from legacy transports to LAN, you can use the same NetGuardian units at all your sites.
