Your proxy agent can be equipped with several different interfaces to support alternate connections to your SNMP manager.

The most common alternate interface is an internal dial-up modem. A modem-equipped proxy agent can dial up a PPP server to connect to your LAN and SNMP manager. To avoid recurring costs the proxy agent should be configured to initiate a connection only when there's an alarm to report.

If dial-up lines aren't available - like at your transmitter site - a PPP connection can be made over the available transport, such as an overhead channel or dedicated line.

The NetGuardian 832A and the NetMediator can support any communications path that can connect to its available serial interfaces: 202, FSK, RS-232 or RS-422/485.
