KDA Remote FAQ

KDA Remote FAQ Answers

Q. I can't connect to KDA Craft Port
A. Possible Causes:

Baud rate incorrect: early KDA versions connected at 1200 baud, later versions at 9600. Try both. (In DOS, baud is set under the Software Parameters - Communication menu item; in Windows, baud is set under Line Properties in the Connect window)

Other serial parameters incorrect: these usually don't get changed and are seldom a problem, should be set for 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit.

Cable incorrect: confirm that you are using an ordinary straight-through serial cable, not a null-modem cable or other exotic cable type.

Incorrect port selected: confirm that you are plugged into the correct port on your computer.

Wrong IRQ (DOS TConfig only): COM 1 usually uses IRQ 4, COM 2 usually uses IRQ 3, but these may differ on your computer. DOS TConfig must be set up to use the correct IRQ by selecting Software Parameters - Communication - Function Key F3.

If your computer normally uses Windows 95 or later, you can determine which IRQ your comport is set up for by selecting Settings - Control Panel - System - Device Manager - Ports - Comport - Resources.

If your computer normally uses DOS or an earlier Windows version, you can determine which IRQ your comport is set up for by typing MSD at the DOS prompt and selecting IRQ Status.
Q. When I download my KDA Time Stamp using the T/KDA for Windows software, I receive a "Checksum Error" and then an "Aborting Transfer" message when it attempts to download the Satellite's. What could be causing this?
A. In this case, there a two main factors which lead up to this issue. First, all KDA's must share a common Ground source, which if not obtained, can cause a "potential ground issue" between units. This is very common when each KDA uses its own power source. Second, each unit must be individually downloaded before a "Shelf" download can take place. Contact DPS Support Department for further assistance if you are unable to resolve this issue.
Q. I want to upgrade my KDATL1 to the latest version of firmware. I am currently running Version 1.1A. Will my current KDA board support this newer rev of firmware and will my software be compatible also?
A. Your current board will support most current versions of TL1 firmware. However you will have to upgrade your software to be compatible with the newer firmware rev. Contact DPS Support Department for further assistance.
Q. Does the KDA Time Stamp support paging to a standard Numeric or Alphanumeric pager?
A. No it does not. If you would like to have your KDA Time Stamp support paging, you need to upgrade to the KDA TAP, which does support paging at no extra charge. Keep in mind, some of the features used by the KDA Time Stamp are not supported by the KDA TAP. Contact DPS Sales Department for more information.
Q. How do you set up a KDA as a TBOS responder?
A. Use a standard KDA with ver 2.1L firmware chip inside. Set up a laptop and plug it into the RS-232 primary port on the KDA (running the DPS Telecom TBOS test set to act as a TBOS interrogator). Setup another laptop and plug it into the craft port of the KDA running TKDA for Windows v3.0L to handle provisioning. Define your hardware setup and docking pads as follows:

Edit Hardware Setup Window:
Firmware Type: Standard
Docking Module 1: RS232
Docking Module 2: NONE
Number of Satellites: 0

Expansion Cards:
In Base Unit: NONE

Edit Docking Ports Window:
Protocol: TBOS
Responder Baud: 2400
Responder Parity: ODD
Response Type: All
TBOS Display: 8

RTS Lead Time: 15
RTS Tail Time: 5
Relay 8 Response to RTS: NONE
Report Satellite Failures: OFF

Double check the settings to insure that they match those of the interrogator, connect the KDA and write the provisioning to the unit. Confirm communication between the KDA and the interrogator using the spy option in monitor mode (see "How do you enable spy in monitor mode of TKDA for Windows").
Q. How do you enable spy in monitor mode of T-KDA for Windows?
A. Run Windows Explorer and find the TKDAW.INI file in the T-KDA for Windows folder. Open it using NotePad and enter the 'Diagnostics=T' line. Exit and save the file and then re-enter monitor mode of T-KDA for Windows, you should be able to access the Spy tab.

Tkdaw.ini
LastDirectory=C:\tkdaw
LastDevice=UNTITLED
ConnectUsing=Serial Cable on COM2
SerBaud=1200
SerData=8
SerParity=NONE
SerStop=1
DefaultModem=19200
TermServer=F
Standard 28800 bps Modem=9600
Diagnostics=T
Q. My T/KDA for windows running under Windows NT can't connect to the craft port.
A. Try changing the baud in T/KDAW from the 9600 default to 2400.
Q. My Windows based DPS T/Config application (T/KDA for Windows) does not show the com port I wish to download with on my laptop.
A. Make sure that port is not being used by another application. Palm pilot's and other applications often seize the com resource even when you are not actively using them.
Q. I'm not receiving pages from my KDA864-TAP when I trigger an alarm.
A. Are you in monitor mode on the T/Config software? The craft port and modem on the KDA use the same resources. So, if you are connected directly to the KDA and are in monitor mode you will not be able to receive pages. Since the processor is communicating with the computer it has no resources left for communicating with the modem. For a KDA to dial out successfully you should have the computer disconnected from the craft port. If you were in monitor mode the only indication would be a brief message showing up on the screen of your PC. If you need to view the activity of the paging, you should use the spy secondary option.

Another issue that would prevent the KDA from paging correctly is that the secondary port is configured wrong. On the KDA864-TAP the secondary pad is where the modem is located. Please check the configuration for this port by going to Edit Configuration / Edit Advanced and check the Secondary Pad Parameters to make sure it is not set for "none". The pad type should be set to T212 for docking module with the Baud set to 1200.

If both of the above items are correct and the KDA864-TAP is reporting to an alphanumeric pager and you are still not receiving your pages, you may want to check into the number the unit is calling and make sure it is a TAP terminal. This is a phone number that the paging company provides for a modem connection and it will follow the Telocator Alphanumeric Input Protocol (TAP). If you were to dial a voicemail box this would be the wrong type of connection for alphanumeric page.
Q. Is TKdaW compatible with Windows XP?
A. Yes, in version 3.3H and higher
Q. Why don't the last 8 alarm points on the KDA work?
A. The last 8 alarm points on most KDAs have alternate wiring. They have both sides of the opto brought out with an internal current resistance. These 8 alarm points can be wired to behave just like the first 56 points by externally wiring one of the two alarm leads to power. The opposite lead will then behave just like the single lead on the first 56 alarm points, in that a ground closure will trigger an alarm condition.

The 8 alarm points can also be set for battery sensing by connecting one of the pins to ground. The opposite pin will behave similar to the regular alarm pin, except a battery (-48v) closure will trigger an alarm on the KDA.
