NetGuardian 864A: Case Studies and Client Reviews

"NetGuardian does what it says it can do, and actually a lot more..."
It's just a fantastic product. The NetGuardian does what it says it can do, and actually a lot more. Most companies claim a lot more than what they can do, but DPS is just the opposite.

"These units have performed very well..."
These [NetGuardian] units have performed very well for UniPoint. The dial-up capability allows us to provision the equipment prior to the WAN connectivity being in place.

"NetGuardian will help us move forward..."
As we move forward in technology at our Radar site we will soon be upgrading the network connection to a T-1. This will allow us to up the Radar resolution and add more sophisticated monitoring of the facility. We now are looking at the DPS NetGuardian to help us monitor more devices such as the generator. NetGuardian will help us move forward by giving us a Web based browser and email notification. Most of the technical staff have moved away from pagers, in favor of phones that can be sent email notification. Most SNMP monitoring systems now have email notification. We hope to purchase the NetGuardian solution soon. I'm sure it will be just as reliable and good as the AlphaMax product.

"As the pricing and features were compared side-by-side, it was very apparent that the DPS NetGuardian was the clear winner" In late February 2001, I was tasked with developing a Fault Alarm System to be used at our Telecommunications Facilities. We identified a set of requirements, made a list of potential vendors, and subsequently narrowed the list to three who met our initial criteria.

The DPS NetGuardian product was tested first. I was very impressed with the ease of installation and great documentation that was provided. When I encountered any issues, a phone call to either you or Rick would always bring quick resolution.

The two other vendor's products participating in the trial didn't have the functionality of the NetGuardian product. I also found their documentation to be quite cumbersome, their software interface to be lacking, and their company's not providing the support that we had expected. Each of the other vendors required additional equipment to handle the analog alarms and their equipment was larger than the NetGuardian, therefore requiring more precious relay rack space.

When all the testing was completed, a business case was created. As the pricing and features were compared side-by-side, it was very apparent that the DPS NetGuardian was the clear winner. We have since begun to install the NetGuardian at two regenerator sites and are moving forward with the deployment to the rest of our network. As we grow in size and additional facilities are added, the DPS NetGuardian product will be our product of choice to satisfy our Fault Alarm Engineering needs.

Again, thanks for your response and commitment to NEON Communications, and I look forward to a continued business relationship.

Case Study: RT Communications uses the NetGuardian & IAM to bring network monitoring in-house

RT Communications has been providing customers with state-of-the-art telecommunications services and products since 1994. Based in Worland, Wyoming, the company maintains a subscriber base of 17,000 in 16 exchanges. As an active and respected leader in their community, RT Communications maintains a staff of professional employees to provide a full spectrum of innovative telecommunications services and products while maintaining an atmosphere of care and integrity for its customers.

point out the IAM and KDA that has allowed RT
Communications to bring their alarm monitoring
in-house and under their control.

Just a few short years ago, RT Communications was faced with the problem of aging equipment that needed replacing. The original exchanges they purchased were mechanical exchanges and they had a small alarm system in place, but when they upgraded to digital systems, they needed expanded capabilities and call-out features that the old system couldn't provide. Steve Keefer, the Plant Manager for RT Communications explains, "We had the Dantel system that was installed by the company from whom we purchased the network, and those systems were reliable in their day, but were not able to meet our needs when we went wireless." To address this issue, RT Communications installed the IAM and several NetGuardians to monitor sites throughout their network.

In addition to needing a reliable, powerful alarm monitoring system, RT Communications was also concerned with the integration of a new system. They needed a complete monitoring system that they could easily integrate into their network and one that addressed all of their needs. "When we purchased the wireless equipment from Nortel, they recommended the DPS system," explains Steve. "It's been pretty good for us. Not only does it deliver the alarm to a tech, it also sends it to the right tech or one that is responsible for that certain area.

"We used to have an outside vendor monitor our network out west. But now [the IAM, NetGuardian and KDA, are] a money saving system because it allows us to keep our network monitoring in-house."

The implementation of the DPS system also gave RT Communications total network visibility from a single location. Steve explains, "We used to have an outside vendor monitor our network out west. But now it's a money saving system because it allows us to keep our network monitoring in-house. The NetGuardian provided us the capability of bringing the alarms from our remote huts into our central office."

The NetGuardian is a powerful, compact LAN-based alarm collector that provides network managers with remote visibility of their IP network elements.

When asked about working with DPS, Curtis Drake, a Central Office Technician replied, "It's been great service. Everyone has been very helpful and easy to work with."
