Announcing the RAB 176N - High Density Alarm Collection Over IP in a Low-cost, Industry Standard Form Factor

RAB 176N
The Remote Alarm Block is an extremely compact alarm collection remote
The RAB has 176 alarm points and 4 controls, combining the functions of an alarm block and an RTU in the smallest possible space.

Take a look inside any equipment room in your network and ask yourself: How much of this stuff is actually making you money? Wouldn't it be better if, instead of taking up space, your support equipment actually freed more space for revenue-generating equipment?

That's the thinking behind the Remote Alarm Block 176 series. These remote telemetry units combine large alarm capacity with a small form factor. With industry-standard wire-wrap alarm terminations and a circuit pack that can be removed without disconnecting alarm wiring, the RAB 176 fits right into your network.

Large Alarm Capacity, Small Size

Both RAB 176 units have 176 discrete alarm inputs, 4 controls and a highly compact (4"H x 8"W x 5"D) relay-rack (MDF) or wall-mount chassis. Providing enough capacity to monitor an entire site, the RAB 176 remotes are perfect for any site with lots of equipment and not much space.

Serial or Network Transport Connectivity

In 2003 we introduced the original RAB 176S, which appeared in Remote Site & Equipment magazine. The RAB 176S (for serial) supports DCPx and TBOS over RS-232 or RS-485 serial interfaces.

Now we've added the new RAB 176N (for network), with support for SNMP, TL1, and DCPx/f over LAN..

Network connectivity adds several new advantages to this powerful remote unit:

  • You can deploy the RAB 176N anywhere a LAN/WAN connection is available, eliminating the need for dedicated circuits and saving you money.
  • There's no need to buy a new, specialized master to monitor the RAB 176N. Versatile multiprotocol support lets you connect the RAB 176N directly to your existing SNMP manager, TL1 master, T/MonXM WorkStation, or IAM-5.
  • The RAB 176N supports both TCP transport, for robust error recovery, and UDP transport, for light use of network resources.

Smooth Migration to LAN

And because the RAB 176N also supports DCPx/f over RS-232 and RS-485, this unit gives you a smooth migration path from serial transport to LAN transport. You can deploy the RAB 176N at sites without a LAN connection now, and when LAN access is added to the site, the unit can be switched to LAN transport with a simple change in provisioning. And you won't have to disconnect any of your alarms.

Other Benefits

The RAB 176N shares all the convenient features of the RAB 176S, like selectable alarm qualification times, trouble-free installation and configuration, free lifetime firmware upgrades, and easy hardware replacement without removing wire wrap connections.

Plus we've added some exciting new features to the RAB 176N, like a real-time clock that saves settings up to 10 years and a debug terminal that works over your IP network

So take another look at your remote equipment sites, and think about how easily 176 discrete alarm points and LAN connectivity for SNMP and TL1 will fit into your busy network. The RAB 176N will give you the coverage you need, and leave you more room for the equipment that makes you money.
