Wireless Modbus Solutions

Ever since the release of the MODBUS protocol in the 1970's, many businesses have implemented networks based on this standard of communication. The protocol itself is rather universal. This is unlike many vendor-specific standards that have been created over the years to "lock-in" customers to one single product-line, MODBUS is commonly supported through many vendors because of the open-publication rights as well as the ability for devices from several generations and companies to send communications back and forth efficiently.

As time has passed, and technological advancements have taken place, this protocol still remains the choice of many network officials. The easy deployment and maintenance has also allowed many to build a network up piece-by-piece as the needs arise, and also contribute to saving time and money during any repair work. If it were not for this constant, many networks today would most likely become a mess of various protocols, alarms, and devices that don't work together. One of the most important advancements in network security is the advent of wireless monitoring devices. Allowing communications to transmit via WI-FI or even cellular networks has put real-time site monitoring into the hands of many more industries. Negating the need for hard-wired connections, wireless communications begin to save money from the beginning of the planning stages. There are many reasons as to why wireless networking solutions have grown in popularity. They eliminate the need to run costly cables. They avoid excess gear that could potentially fail. They also save time and effort.

While many companies utilizing this route have also gone with proprietary communications protocol, MODBUS is still in the lead in terms of versatility and reliability. The fact that this series of alarms and correspondence is straight-forward and simple allows the data to be sent rapidly in small strings. The hardware itself is already designed to decipher everything. It won't have to wait for a secondary reply from the Master Station or sensors.

For messages passed via cellular networks, the alarm string is simple enough in most cases to be sent via standard SMS messages. The SMS will go to a receiver that converts the text to MODBUS format before sending it to the Master Station. For solutions utilizing WI-FI, communications are readily available to be sent directly through a LAN connection, or across the internet in a matter of seconds. Multiple alarm responses are still readily available as well. Since the nature of communications with this method are rather simple, you should have an alarm send responses to a lot of receivers. This allows for a technician, central office, or other devices to react in a suitable way as quickly as possible. All of this working together to create a more reliable network with even fewer possibilities for downtime.

For a large variety of companies, MODBUS protocol is a standard of operations. As time has passed and technology has grown, this standard has proved its usefulness and versatility by remaining on the forefront of electronic security communication.

Are you currently exploring opportunities that wireless gear may bring to your network monitoring solutions? Be sure to ask your preferred vendor for more information regarding the capabilities of MODBUS protocol for your single applications.
