SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) refers to an extensive distributed measurement and control system. A SCADA solution, therefore, is a system that has been developed to monitor and control a plant or equipment.

SCADA Solutions Collect Data in Real-Time
A SCADA solution provides a user with data acquisition, networked data communication, data presentation, and control. These processes are enabled by real-time data collection. The components that collect and transmit this data across equipment are the sensors, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), SCADA master units, and the communication network.

Monitoring functions are a component of any SCADA solution, while control functions may only be found in more advanced systems. A SCADA solution monitors its network by collecting data from sensors across the network. The input and output values generated by these sensors are sent to the RTU. The RTU is able to communicate the signals to the HMI (Human-Machine Interface) or alarm master, which then translates the data and alarms into a human readable form.
